GitHub Copilot Deprecates GPT-5.1 Models

GitHub deprecated three GPT-5.1 Codex models on April 1, 2026. All workflows must migrate to GPT-5.3-Codex. Enterprise admins need to enable the new model in policies.

GitHub Copilot Deprecates GPT-5.1 Models

TL;DR

  • GPT-5.1-Codex, GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, and GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini deprecated as of April 1, 2026
  • All three models replaced by GPT-5.3-Codex across all Copilot experiences
  • Enterprise admins must enable GPT-5.3-Codex in model policies; no action needed to remove old models

New

  • GPT-5.3-Codex now the standard — replaces all three deprecated GPT-5.1 variants across Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask mode, agents, and code completions

Breaking Changes

  • GPT-5.1-Codex, GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini removed — update workflows and integrations immediately to use GPT-5.3-Codex
  • Enterprise model policies require update — Copilot Enterprise admins must enable GPT-5.3-Codex access through Copilot settings before users can select it in VS Code and github.com
