Copilot Chat Now Opens in Context on GitHub Web

Copilot chat on GitHub web now opens as a contextual side panel instead of navigating away. Pull requests and issues automatically attach as context, reducing friction when asking questions about your code.

Copilot Chat Now Opens in Context on GitHub Web

TL;DR

  • Copilot chat now opens as a side panel on the page you're viewing instead of navigating away
  • Context from pull requests, issues, and repos automatically attaches to your chat session
  • You can still access full-page immersive chat via the More menu

New

  • Contextual chat panel — Copilot opens inline on your current GitHub page, eliminating context switching when asking questions about code
  • Automatic context attachment — Pull requests, issues, and repository references automatically attach to chat as you navigate, letting you ask questions across multiple surfaces without manual setup
  • Agent integration — Start agent sessions directly from chat to create pull requests or run deep research queries

What's Different

  • Clicking the Copilot icon now opens a side panel instead of navigating to github.com/copilot
  • Full-page immersive chat is still available via the More menu or the arrow icon on the panel
