Codex Model Availability Update April 2026
ChatGPT sign-in users in Codex lose access to gpt-5.1 and gpt-5.2-codex variants starting April 7. Full removal April 14. API key users unaffected.
TL;DR
- ChatGPT sign-in users lose access to gpt-5.2-codex, gpt-5.1-codex variants, gpt-5.1, and gpt-5 starting April 7
- Models fully removed April 14 — migrate to gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.3-codex, or gpt-5.2
- API key sign-in users unaffected; can use any API-supported model
Breaking Changes
- Model picker changes (April 7) — gpt-5.2-codex, gpt-5.1-codex-mini, gpt-5.1-codex-max, gpt-5.1-codex, gpt-5.1, and gpt-5 no longer appear in the model selector for ChatGPT sign-in users
- Full removal (April 14) — these models will be completely unavailable in Codex for ChatGPT sign-in; existing sessions using them will fail
What's Still Available
- All ChatGPT sign-in users — gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.3-codex, gpt-5.2
- ChatGPT Pro users — also get gpt-5.3-codex-spark
- API key sign-in — access to any API-supported model; no restrictions
Migration Path
- Switch to API key authentication — sign in with an API key or configure a custom model provider to use other models in Codex
- Update your workflows — if you rely on gpt-5.1 or gpt-5 variants, test gpt-5.4 or gpt-5.4-mini as replacements before April 14
